Ways to Buy a Policy and Tax Implications

Long-term care insurance policies are not standardized like Medicare supplement insurance: Each policy is different. Companies sell policies with many combinations of benefits and coverages. There are several ways to purchase coverage:

Most of the policies in Kansas are sold on an individual basis and through insurance agents. 

Different plans are also divided into 

"Tax Qualified" or "Nontax Qualified"

Federal law provides for favorable tax treatment of certain long-term care plans. Plans are tax qualified or nontax qualified. Check with your tax adviser to find out which plan is best for you.
