Do a Little Prep Work

You should make a list of questions before you shop for a health plan. As well as:

  • Get information about household income

  • Set a budget for health insurance

  • Find out if you can stay with your current doctors and pharmacy

  • Understand how insurance works

    • Including getting an understanding of deductibles, out-of-pocket maximums, and copayments

The Kansas Insurance Department offers resources here. There are a number of other resources:

They help you understand

  • How insurance works

  • The different insurance options

  • What to consider when you buy coverage

A new standard form called the Summary of Benefits and Coverage (SBC), and the companion Uniform Glossary that includes a set of uniform definitions, are also available for all health insurance plans. Click here for more information.

  • This information can help you compare different insurance options.

  • You can get the form and definitions through the Health Insurance Marketplace or ask the plan provider for it.

If you are eligible to buy coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace, you can enroll through

  • The Marketplace website at HealthCare.gov

  • By phone at 800-318-2596
