Exemptions to the Individual Mandate
There are some cases where there is no penalty to not having coverage.
Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), health insurance companies cannot limit coverage based on your health condition. These are often called “pre-existing conditions.”
These protections apply whether you buy coverage through the exchange or outside the exchange.
