Can a Person's Health Condition Affect Their Coverage?

  • Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), health insurance companies cannot limit coverage based on your health condition. These are often called “pre-existing conditions.”

  • They also cannot charge you a higher premium because of a health condition.

These protections apply whether you buy coverage through the exchange or outside the exchange.
