What if I Don't Need All of the Benefits in a Plan?

Can I Take Benefits Out of a Plan?

No

You can’t take benefits out of a plan.

At a minimum, every health plan on the Health Insurance Marketplace must provide coverage for all of the essential health benefits the Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires.

  • Even though you may not need every benefit in a plan, plans must cover all the essential benefits to share risk across a broad pool of consumers. This makes sure all benefits are available for everyone.
  • This also helps to protect people from risks they can’t always predict across their lifetimes.
